AAFC: Public Invited to Open Farm Day in P.E.I.

CHARLOTTETOWN, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND--(Marketwire - Sept. 21, 2007) - Open Farm Day is taking place at 20 farms across the province Sunday, September 23. It is an opportunity for the public to meet some of the province's local food producers and see where food comes from.

"Open Farm Day is a great way to experience life on the farm" said the Honourable Gerry Ritz, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister for the Canadian Wheat Board. "Our farm producers provide the public with safe, high-quality food every day and I encourage the public to visit and learn about the important work done on the farm."

"Prince Edward Island farmers take great pride in producing safe, high quality food products for domestic and international markets," said Prince Edward Island Agriculture Minister Neil LeClair. "Those attending Open Farm Day will have a first-hand opportunity to see how our products are produced and learn more from the people who produce them."

Open Farm Day is presented across the region in partnership with the Sobeys grocery chain and serves as the kick-off for the Canadian Agriculture and Food Celebration (CAFC). The celebration is designed to spotlight the importance of agriculture and the food industry. Through the CAFC, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada supports agriculture awareness projects that improve public understanding and support of the agriculture and agri-food sector.

The Open Farm Day theme in Prince Edward Island this year is Fresh, Healthy and Local."

The agriculture and food industry accounts for nearly one in four jobs in Prince Edward Island, with farm cash receipts of approximately $380 million annually.

"Open Farm Day is a fantastic opportunity for people of all ages to get out and experience many sectors of the agriculture industry," said Rayanne Frizzell, Chair of the P.E.I. Agriculture Awareness Committee. "We are pleased to join with so many farms across the island to highlight the industry and educate the public in a fun and unique way."
