AASC's Outer Barrel Assembly Set to Launch

STOCKTON, CA--(Marketwire - October 7, 2009) - Applied Aerospace Structures Corp. (AASC) has played an integral part in the completion of the DigitalGlobe WorldView-2 satellite through their fabrication of the Outer Barrel Assembly (OBA) for Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. The contract for this assembly was signed in April of 2005, with the product delivered in August of 2006. The DigitalGlobe WorldView-2 satellite is set to launch on October 8, 2009 from Vandenberg AFB. The OBA structure required the use of lightweight materials to meet rigorous operational and environmental requirements, as it must survive extreme hot and cold temperature cycles found in space over the spacecraft's planned eight years of orbit.

Ball Aerospace has reported to AASC that the OBA has successfully completed many cycles of vibration, acoustic, and thermal vacuum testing. According to Ball program personnel, the overall OBA structure has been found to be structurally sound and exceedingly precise from a dimensional standpoint, and no assembly or test issues were reported.

The DigitalGlobe WorldView-2 satellite is a multispectral imaging spacecraft providing high-resolution imagery of Earth. The images are used for mapping, disaster relief, and environmental planning, exploration, and simulation.
