Access Alliance today announced the launch of the Nahom Berhane Scholarship Fundraising Campaign to commemorate their colleague Nahom Berhane, a passionate community leader who was killed on September 27, 2014.

Nahom Berhane worked at Access Alliance Multicultural Health and Community Services as a health promoter. He was a passionate leader with genuine commitment to fairness, equity, and community empowerment, and he was a well-respected and much loved young mentor for many youth. To commemorate his legacy, Access Alliance and community members came together last spring to establish the Nahom Berhane Scholarship for Leadership and Inclusion.

The Scholarship will provide assistance to youth in need of financial support and who are attending a post-secondary institution, including universities, colleges and professional trades training. To be eligible for a $4,000 scholarship, the ideal candidate must have a proven track record of volunteerism, community service and leadership in the community.

"The Berhane Family is very moved by the support and effort that has been invested by the community in establishing this Scholarship in honour of my brother Nahom," says Arsema Berhane. "There is no better way to remember Nahom and the incredible impact he had on our community - on our youth - than by recognising the spirit of volunteerism, community service and leadership which he embodied every day of his life. This is a wonderful initiative that will see his commitment to our community live on thanks to the next generation of community leaders who will benefit from this financial support."

The fundraising campaign launches today to mark the 1 year anniversary of Nahom's death, and will officially run for 60 days. The goal of the campaign is to raise $100,000. To date, $21,000 has already been raised, thanks to the generosity of Access Alliance, Beck Taxi, and BMO Financial Group.

The general public can make a donation to the establishment of the Nahom Berhane Scholarship Fund online, at www.nahom.org.
