According to Protection Management, LLC; Hospitals Need to Plan for Active Shooters in the Workplace

REDDING, CA--(Marketwire - Feb 24, 2012) - According to Protection Management, LLC, what was once a safe and healing environment where no one would think that a violent act would occur is becoming more violent. There are a lot of discussions as to the cause, but while that is being debated hospitals need to take actions to reduce the threat and prevent a tragedy.

Protection Management, LLC, reminds healthcare organizations of the changing environment within the healthcare field that is steadily becoming more violent.

In the last year there have been several shootings within hospitals. They have involved murder and/or suicide, where a family member murders their relative that is a patient, and then shoot themselves. There have also been cases where hospital staff was also shot either because they tried to intervene or were blamed for the relative's condition or lack of care.

John M. White, CPP, CHPA, President at Protection Management, LLC, warns that these incidents of workplace violence in healthcare will continue and their frequency if healthcare organizations do not become proactive and conduct assessments and staff training to react to such incidents. White reminds hospital administrative staff that there are in many cases warning signs. Each and every time there is an identified threat there needs to be a threat assessment conducted by a qualified professional. This is not an area to be sparing with on, as a substandard assessment may lead to a serious incident that could result in death. Threat assessments can and should be a team approach with several disciplines bringing their expertise to the table.
