ACDI/Canada Supports Children's Rights

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Dec. 11, 2006) - The Honourable Josee Verner, Minister of International Cooperation and Minister for La Francophonie and Official Languages, congratulated UNICEF on the release today of its report, The State of the World's Children 2007, and its recognition of the extent to which equality between women and men and the rights and well being of children go hand in hand. Minister Verner also took the opportunity to respond to the Report entitled Delivering as One that was presented to the Secretary General of the United Nations by the High-level Panel on System-wide Coherence in November.

"Canada, like UNICEF, knows that to fulfil children's rights, we must promote equality between women and men, girls and boys," said Minister Verner. "The recommendation before the UN to create the new position of Under-Secretary-General for gender issues is a positive step in supporting this concern."

The State of the World's Children 2007 calls for equality between women and men as a necessary step toward sustainable development in the world, and as a means of directly benefiting children. The report argues that this equality must be found in the household, in employment, and in politics and government.
