Ace Hardware Declares October 18 "National Light Bulb Day"

Neighborhood Retailer Encourages Homeowners to Transition to Energy-Efficient Lighting

OAK BROOK, IL--(Marketwire - Oct 18, 2012) - Ace Hardware, the largest retailer-owned hardware cooperative in the industry, has declared October 18 "National Light Bulb Day." This new "hardware holiday" gives Ace Hardware an opportunity to remind consumers of the national transition to energy-efficient lighting and to help shoppers find the right light bulbs for their needs.

According to the Department of Energy (DOE), lighting options such as Compact Fluorescent (CFL) bulbs and Light-Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs are 75-80 percent more energy efficient and can last up to 25-times longer than traditional incandescent light bulbs. This adds up to savings of approximately $6 a year in electricity costs per bulb and more than $40 over the lifetime of Energy Star® qualified light bulbs -- it also reduces the need to purchase light bulbs as frequently.

National Light Bulb Day also raises awareness of the new lighting standards set through the Energy Independence and Security Act. As a result of this legislation, consumers will need to transition to energy-efficient light bulbs for their lighting needs, such as CFL light bulbs, LED lights and energy-efficient halogen options. This year, the transition began with the phase out of 100-watt general service incandescent light bulbs, which can no longer be manufactured for the United States. In 2013, the transition will continue with the phase out of 75-watt incandescent bulbs followed by the 60 and 40-watt incandescent bulbs phasing out in 2014.

"National Light Bulb Day is a way for Ace to honor the light bulb's shining past and bright future and to keep these important changes in lighting top of mind for consumers," said Lou Manfredini, Ace's Home Expert. "By helping homeowners quickly and easily select the right energy-efficient light bulb for their homes we will save them time and money on their home energy bills."

To celebrate, Ace will offer consumers an exciting promotion, $5 off their next purchase of $25* or more at participating stores October 17-22, 2012.*
