Achieving Literacy Is More Than.....

ACHIEVING LITERACY IS MORE THAN RECOGNIZING WORDS Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, Education Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO, ON--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 4, 2005) - Every class has some students who can read the words, but don't get the meaning. These struggling students need help. Their teachers can learn what works at a summer course offered by the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) and the Hamilton-Wentworth Teacher Local.

The course is one of a wide range of professional development opportunities offered this summer by ETFO in partnership with its locals across the province. Courses are taught by ETFO members and designed to provide teachers with practical skills and resources to use in their classrooms. Hundreds of elementary teachers are expected to take part.

Available courses include a women's leadership institute, principals' qualifications program, and credit courses.

What: Strategic Reading for Struggling Readers

When: August 9, 10, and 11

This practical and interactive course builds bridges to literacy. It explores research-based methods for increasing student achievement, comprehension strategies, keys to reading proficiency and the characteristics of a strategic reader.
