ACORN Members Pleased re Inclusionary Housing Announcement

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - March 14, 2016) - ACORN members are pleased to hear Minister McMeekin's announcement granting Inclusionary Zoning powers to Ontario municipalities today. ACORN members and allies - such as Social Planning Toronto - have been fighting to pressure the province to change provincial legislation enabling municipalities to implement Inclusionary Housing since 2009. ACORN members will keep the pressure on to make sure the legislation gets tabled and passed ASAP!

Granting Inclusionary Zoning powers to municipalities would enable them to mandate that new developments have affordable types of housing in them. If the Liberal Government had given Toronto the ability to use Inclusionary Zoning even 5 years ago - we would have 12,000 more units of affordable housing on the way today according to the City's Chief Planner Jennifer Keesmaat.

"We are excited to hear the announcement. As we and our allies have said for 6 years, Inclusionary Zoning will give municipalities a powerful tool to create affordable housing," - ACORN leader Alejandra Ruiz Vargas.

ACORN looks forward to participating in the upcoming consultations, as this is just one step to solving the growing housing crisis in Ontario where 168,000 families are on a wait list for affordable housing.
