ACQYR: Take a Deep Breath - We're Not Coping With Stress Very Well

New survey reveals that almost 4 in 5 not equipped to handle stress

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 28, 2006) - Stressed out? Probably. Survey results released today indicate that four out of every five people feel they're not able to handle stress. Despite the fact that we're inundated with media coverage about workplace stress and its side effects, results from an ACQYR survey taken during the summer of 2006 indicate that a majority of people understand -- in principle -- what they need to do to reduce stress. It's practising what they preach that seems to be the challenge.

"Ask people what they need to do to relieve stress, and you'll hear the usual: take a deep breath, go for a walk or get a good night's sleep," stated Ronnie Nijmeh, president of ACQYR, a Toronto-based company specializing in stress management. "But when the vast majority of people say they don't feel adequately prepared to handle stress, it's obvious there is a knowing-doing gap."

In fact, the social survey, Stress: How Are We Coping, showed that people responded to stress in four fundamental ways: 1) diversionary techniques; 2) breathing, meditation & prayer; 3) sharing the burden with friends & family; or 4) by "keeping on keeping on" - folks with little-to-no stress management skills who simply waited for the day to end or the stressful situation to "go away."

"There was a striking absence of positive stress management techniques that help get to the root of the problem, for example delegation or time-management skills," noted Nijmeh. "People are treating the symptoms but not the root cause."

When it came to how on-the-job stress training could be improved, survey respondents had clear suggestions: stress management programs that could be easily implemented into an already busy day-to-day routine and ongoing accessibility to stress "checkups" and management sessions.
