ActivIdentity and Queensland Transport to Deliver First Class Smartcard Drivers License Program

FREMONT, CA--(Marketwire - October 20, 2008) - ActivIdentity (Australia) Pty. Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of ActivIdentity Corporation (NASDAQ: ACTI), a global leader in digital identity assurance, and the Queensland Government, Australia, acting through the Department of Transport ("Queensland Transport"), today announced the signing of an agreement to deliver a Smartcard Management System for the secure issuance of smartcard driver licenses to Queensland citizens.

The capacity to issue a smartcard driver license will be progressively rolled out to license issuing centers across Queensland, with implementation complete in 2010. It will take up to five years for all Queenslanders to have the smartcard license, as drivers will not be required to apply for it until their existing license expires. (Queensland driver licenses are valid for up to five years.)

ActivIdentity will deliver its identity assurance platform, along with configuration and integration services, for the smartcard license program. The solution is based on both GlobalPlatform and ISO 24727 standards and integrates into the Queensland Transport IT environment.

"Following an extensive open tender process, the Queensland Government selected ActivIdentity to deliver its identity assurance platform for the smartcard license project," said Cathi Taylor, Chief Information Officer, Queensland Transport.

"The decision to select ActivIdentity was based on their proven track record in large-scale identity assurance deployments, a highly configurable full-feature smartcard management system, and long-term support for open standards," she said.

"ActivIdentity is proud that the Queensland Government has selected our identity assurance technology for this groundbreaking deployment. The scale and unique features of this program demonstrate and leverage our strong experience, product excellence, and ability to deliver identity assurance across the full spectrum of credential management," said ActivIdentity CEO Grant Evans. "The Queensland Government is creating a safe harbor for its citizens' identities by replacing vulnerable laminated licenses with secure smartcard-based licenses."

"ActivIdentity is committed to enhancing the security of the issuance and credential management of driver licenses, and we enthusiastically support Queensland and its citizens in this pioneering use of smartcard technology for secure driver licenses," he said.

Queensland Transport has designed the Smartcard Management System for the new smartcard driver license as well as additional smartcard products. This will include the Adult Proof of Age card (formerly Card 18+), driver authorizations for passenger transport and a variety of licensing industry authorizations. A new marine license indicator smartcard will also be introduced for people who do not have a driver license.

The new Queensland smartcard licenses are designed to operate with other national and state systems in Australia that are compliant with Australia's Government Smartcard Framework and Smartcard License Interoperability Protocol (SLIP). The smartcard medium enables a holder's personal information to be securely stored as data on an embedded computer chip. Using a smartcard that contains identification software enables verification of identity in both physical and online environments, thereby reducing fraud, forgery and tampering.
