Activists to Protest Outside Toronto Stock Exchange for Victims of Rana Plaza Tragedy

Peaceful Rally Set to Take Place for Victims of Rana Plaza Tragedy in Toronto

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - April 24, 2015) -

ATTN: TORONTO MEDIA AND ASSIGNMENT EDITORS FOR FRIDAY, APRIL 24

A peaceful demonstration is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. today, April 24, in the heart of Toronto's financial district to mark the second anniversary of the Rana Plaza garment factory collapse in Bangladesh, in which more than 1,100 workers died and thousands more suffered debilitating injuries in the deadliest garment factory accident in history.

Canada's leading voice for retail workers, UFCW Canada, will be joining activists and social justice allies to call on stock holders to pressure certain global brands to provide adequate contributions to the Rana Plaza Donors Trust Fund, which was established to provide long-term compensation to victims of the Rana Plaza tragedy.

Activists are also urging these companies to sign the Bangladesh Accord, which would oblige them to use independent, third party inspectors of their Bangladesh suppliers to ensure that tragedies like Rana Plaza never happen again.
