Actress Olivia Newton-John Tells EmpowHER How Breast Self-Exams and Early Detection of Her Breast Cancer Were the Key to Saving Her Life

SCOTTSDALE, AZ--(Marketwire - August 27, 2010) -  Four-time Grammy Award-winning actress Olivia Newton-John, known for her for her leading role in "Grease," tells EmpowHER during her videotaped interview that performing a self breast exam helped her identify her breast cancer in its early stages, and was the key to saving her life.

According to the American Cancer Society, there are about 207,090 new cases of breast cancer in women each year (2010). Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women.

Diagnosed with breast cancer during the same weekend her father passed away, Newton-John discusses how focusing on her healing, rather than her sickness, helped her through her journey and gave her the strength to advocate for herself. "You think it couldn't happen to you, but you can do it and you will do it. You will find the strength you never knew you had," says Newton-John. "Release your tears and fears and speak with someone you feel safe with."

Newton-John encourages early detection and breast self-exams and for women to think positively about the outcome, stressing that thoughts affect reality. "Laugh as much as you can because laughter is very healing, and of course look into vitamins, food and exercises that may help you," she explains.

"Her story is an important reminder of how vital it is to know your own body," said Dr. Jay Harness, Director of the Comprehensive Breast Center at St. Joseph's Hospital in Orange, Calif., and member of EmpowHER's Medical Advisory Board. "Self breast exams should remain a part of every woman's regular preventative effort," he added.

EmpowHER's Founder, Chairperson and CEO, Michelle King Robson, said, "There are so many women out there who are struggling with breast cancer who need to hear that cancer isn't a death sentence; it can be treated and overcome. EmpowHER is here for these women. Through our online community, women can find the strength, support and knowledge they need by connecting with others like themselves."

Newton-John has co-designed the Liv Aid, an FDA-cleared medical device that makes clinical breast self-examinations effortless and more comfortable. The Aid reduces friction between the fingers and the breast for ease of movement of the fingers over the breast during a self-exam. She has partnered with Geiger, the largest privately held and managed promotional company in North America as the exclusive distributor. The initiative is to empower and encourage women to take control of their breast health with the device and to provide an online resource of breast health information through the website. "That I am fine today and stronger than before, I credit to early detection," says Newton-John. She will also appear in a docudrama called "1 A Minute," which follows celebrities from all over the world and their journey with breast cancer on October 6th and release a healing CD, "Grace and Gratitude Renewed" in September.
