ACWA Lauds Appointments to Delta Stewardship Council

Strong Slate of Appointees Seen as Well Suited for Critical Mission

SACRAMENTO, CA--(Marketwire - March 19, 2010) -  Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA) Executive Director Timothy Quinn issued the following statement today on appointments to the Delta Stewardship Council announced by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg. Created as part of a comprehensive legislative package on water enacted in November 2009, the council is charged with developing a plan to guide state and local actions to improve both water supply reliability and ecosystem health in the Delta.

"The appointments announced today reflect a strong slate of individuals suited to the important mission ahead. Phil Isenberg brings decades of experience and knowledge of Delta issues, and led the Delta Vision Blue Ribbon Task Force effort that was so central to last year's legislative accomplishments on water.

"Randy Fiorini, a former ACWA president with more than 15 years of experience in water issues, brings not only a statewide view but also an upstream perspective that will be critical to the council's success.

"Richard Roos-Collins has very strong environmental credentials and has made a career of approaching resource issues in a way that works for the environment and the economy. That is exactly the perspective the council will need to meet its goals.

"Hank Nordhoff will bring valuable experience as a business leader from Southern California and a practical person who understands the importance of water to the industrial sector.

"Former Sen. Patrick Johnston has decades of valuable experience representing the Delta and a long record of working for statewide solutions.

"These five individuals join Sacramento County Supervisor Don Nottoli, who will capably represent the Delta Protection Commission on the council, and Gloria Gray, a previously announced appointee by former Assembly Speaker Karen Bass who brings expertise from serving as a director of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and the West Basin Municipal Water District.

"We have high expectations that these council appointees will continue the momentum of the historic legislative package and the Delta Vision process to think outside the box and chart a new future for California water."

ACWA is a statewide association of public agencies whose 450 members are responsible for about 90% of the water delivered in California. For more information, visit www.acwa.com.
