The Adoption Council of Canada (ACC) Welcomes the Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services' Announcement Today, Urges the Need to Find Permanent Families for Crown Wards

OTTAWA, ON--(Marketwired - September 29, 2015) - The Adoption Council of Canada (ACC) welcomes the Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services' announcement today of additional measures that will help meet the urgent need to find permanent families for Crown wards waiting in provincial care.

Today's announcement of expanded subsidies for families adopting children, a partnership to fund 15 more Wendy's Wonderful Kids recruiters, and an investment in a post-adoption support system is great news for children and youth in care and for adoptive, kinship and guardianship families.

"Ontario is listening to families about the post-adoption support they need to make sure they can be the strong, forever families our children and youth deserve," says Deborah Brennan, chair of the Adoption Council of Canada (

"We applaud these steps and look forward to working with the Ministry in the future on more initiatives that will help find permanent families for more waiting children and youth."

As the host of Canada's Waiting Children (, the only national web site featuring pictures and profiles of waiting children, the Adoption Council of Canada is particularly pleased that the province recognizes the power of photolisting to find families for waiting children and youth. Requiring Children's Aid Societies to refer children and youth to these sites is a policy decision we have long advocated.

"Seeing a child or teenager's photo can spark a powerful connection for parents that lasts a lifetime," says Laura Eggertson, interim executive director of the ACC. "Photolistings work. It's great to see thoughtful public policy in action."

The Adoption Council of Canada hopes all the provinces and territories that do not already have similar measures in place will consider adopting them. With an estimated 30,000 children and youth in care across Canada who need permanent homes, we must act now to make sure they don't age out of care without forever families.
