AdoptWalk 2014 Raises Funds to Help Waiting Kids Find Families, Educates Children Overseas

OTTAWA, ON--(Marketwired - Sep 16, 2014) - The Adoption Council of Canada and Children's Bridge Foundation are holding their annual fundraiser, AdoptWalk 2014, on Saturday, September 27 at Ottawa's Britannia Park.

This family-focused event revolves around a 5-kilometre walk along the Ottawa River, games for all ages, a bouncy castle, BBQ, a silent auction, and great prizes for the highest pledge-earners.

AdoptWalk raises money to help the Adoption Council of Canada raise awareness about, and help find parents for, the 30,000 children and youth in foster care across the country who are waiting for permanent families.

Children's Bridge Foundation, a charitable organization created by adoptive parents, supports health and education programs for abandoned or orphaned children in the developing world.

Join adoptive families and their supporters from companies like Jockey International on Saturday, September 27 to help us help children by giving them the greatest gift of all: a family.

AdoptWalk takes place from 9 a.m. (registration) until 1 p.m. Please register online at www.adoptwalk.ca, raise pledges, and bring your family and friends! Teams are also encouraged.

"AdoptWalk is a fun day for the whole family, and a great way to get your organization or company involved in a worthwhile charitable event that gets people moving and lets them know about this important social issue," says Laura Eggertson, chair of the Adoption Council of Canada.

The walk brings many members of the adoption community together, from families who have adopted internationally to those who adopt in Ottawa, as well as birth families and friends.

"This year, Children's Bridge Foundation proceeds are providing school supplies, life changing medical surgeries, and health care for orphaned and abandoned children in Asia and Africa," says Cathy Murphy of Children's Bridge. "Your pledges and donations will make a huge difference in the lives of disadvantaged children."

Adoption Council of Canada

The Adoption Council of Canada (ACC, www.adoption.ca) is a national, non-profit organization and a registered charity. Based in Ottawa, the ACC acts as a clearing house for information about how to adopt. We promote the placement of the 30,000 children and youth waiting in foster care for permanent families in Canada.

The ACC helps Canadians understand the benefits and challenges of adoption for children, birth families, and adoptive parents, and fosters communication among all these groups.

The ACC is the only national organization devoted to adoption. We provide tools and services to local and regional adoption service providers, and speak about adoption issues at the federal and provincial level. The ACC has been effective in achieving significant improvements in legislation, policy and practice, particularly in the area of open records (Ontario, Nova Scotia), photolisting on websites (Alberta, Ontario), and removing barriers to the adoption of children and youth in care (Ontario). Over the past four years, we testified before a Parliamentary committee about ways the federal government could support adoption, including expanding EI benefits for adoptive parents.

The ACC board and membership cover the breadth of the country. Our work reaches beyond our formal membership base, through our working relationships with adoption organizations across the country as well as in the United States. The ACC also works with provincial departments responsible for child welfare, child advocates, professional social work organizations, university and college social work departments, and researchers.

Children's Bridge Foundation

The Children's Bridge Foundation (CBF, www.cbfoundation.com) is an Ottawa-based charity dedicated to supporting health and education programs for orphaned and abandoned children in the developing world. Started in 2003 by a group of adoptive parents, our charity is run by volunteers who have a passionate desire to help improve the lives children who have so little and deserve so much more.

Our mandate is to partner with efficient and accountable organizations in the developing world to assist them in offering orphaned and abandoned children healthcare and educational programs in the following areas:

  • Providing medical support (including the treatment of HIV) and nutritional programs;
  • Providing surgeries and rehabilitation programs for orphaned children with special medical needs;
  • Providing teachers to support education and learning.

The Children's Bridge Foundation is a non-governmental organization that has no religious or political affiliation. Over the years, we have helped support children in China, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Nepal, Kazakhstan and Vietnam. This year we are focusing on projects in Asia and Africa.
