Adorama Honors 5 Greatest Female Photographers of All Time

An Article Recently Published on Adorama Learning Center (ALC) Lists Adorama's Five Favorite Female Photographers throughout History

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Mar 16, 2016) - Adorama, one of the world's largest photography, video and audio, imaging and electronics retailers, recently published a list of its five favorite female photographers of all time on Adorama Learning Center (ALC). The list was released in celebration of Women's History Month, which recognizes women's achievements in American history.

"In photojournalism, fashion, and nearly every other corner of photography, women have made fantastic inroads to become pioneers and innovators in every microcosm of modern-day photography. Still, being female in what remains in many ways an industry still dominated by existing patriarchy is no easy task, and that's what makes outstanding female photographers all the more impressive," notes Adorama's Hutton Marshall.

Hutton's list includes American photographers Annie Leibovitz and Diane Arbus. Both photographers are known for their remarkable achievements, as well as their unique and distinctive bodies of work. Leibovitz and Arbus began their careers in editorial photography, producing iconic images for the likes of Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, Vogue, and Seventeen.

While Leibovitz made a name for herself shooting portraits of celebrities for major magazines, Arbus achieved renown for her photographs of marginalized groups -- such as dwarfs, transgender people, nudists, and circus performers. While both women have very different aesthetics, they both share a desire to connect with their subjects, resulting in highly emotive works.
