Advanced Practice Strategies Expands Leadership Team

New Role Brings on Seasoned Nurse Executive as Vice President of Clinical Effectiveness

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwired - February 06, 2014) - Advanced Practice Strategies (APS) today announced it has hired Lora Sparkman, MHA, BSN, RN as Vice President of Clinical Effectiveness. In this role, Lora will focus on helping hospitals and health systems evaluate the purchase of the APS platform, GNOSIS™, as well as support clients who already have the platform in maximizing its adoption and benefits. Lora comes to APS after seventeen years with Ascension Health, the nation's largest non-profit health system, where she served most recently as Director of Clinical Excellence.

GNOSIS optimizes healthcare outcomes by measuring and improving clinical decision making. Launched first in the area of obstetrics, and currently in alpha testing for emergency medicine, it assesses clinicians' knowledge and judgment and prescribes an individualized learning path that delivers educational content only and exactly where each clinician needs it. As a registered nurse, Lora understands the needs and pressures of day-to-day GNOSIS users as well as the nursing administrators who often act as decision-makers in the purchasing process.

Lora was instrumental in several healthcare quality initiatives of national visibility at Ascension Health. She supported one of the largest obstetrical research grants from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and was instrumental in developing Ascension's perinatal safety program that included the APS product, GNOSIS for Obstetrics. Lora also led Ascension's Obstetrics Adverse Event work as part of the system's "Hospital Engagement Network" (HEN) project, which developed through a contract from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) awarded in late 2011. Twenty-six health systems were selected as HENs, with the goal of making healthcare safer and less costly by targeting and reducing millions of preventable injuries and complications from healthcare-acquired conditions.

"We are thrilled to have Lora on board," said APS CEO Russ Richmond, MD. "Lora brings a combination of clinical, business, and strategic skills that will resonate with our clients who work hard each day to improve quality and reduce costs. Her ability to understand both clinical and administrative perspectives is critical to our business model. While GNOSIS is in use by physicians and nurses as well as other clinicians, practicing nurses are by far the majority of our user base and Lora's background is an incredible asset to our company."

Prior to Ascension Health, Lora held multiple clinical consulting roles as well as positions with Humana Health Care Plans, Group Health Plans, and St. Mary's Health Center in St. Louis, MO. She holds a Master of Health Administration degree from Lindenwood University and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Missouri. Lora has collaborated with many prestigious patient safety organizations, including the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, Kaiser Permanente, March of Dimes, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and Intermountain Healthcare.
