Advantech Announces Packetarium™ XL Servers for Next Generation NFV Scale-Out Architectures

New Systems Bring Greater Performance, Flexibility and Cost Efficiencies to Strengthen the Transition to NFV and Software Defined Infrastructure

BARCELONA, SPAIN--(Marketwired - March 02, 2015) - Mobile World Congress - Advantech (TWSE: 2395) today introduced two new platforms for optimizing the performance of next generation enterprise and telecom applications, enabling new, cost-effective ways to scale-out compute performance on Intel® Architecture processors distributed across high-speed switched backplanes.

The Packetarium™ XLe for Enterprise series is optimized for maximum CPU and I/O density, bringing higher throughput to meet the increased demand for faster packet handling in enterprise networking and telecom middle boxes. The system is designed for Network Intelligence deployments requiring accelerated packet processing performance on 10GbE, 40GbE and 100GbE ports in applications such as high-end network security, policy control and traffic analysis. The first member of the family fits in just 4RU and reaches performance levels typically only found in specialized ATCA or proprietary Network Processor-based solutions at a fraction of the cost.

The Packetarium™ XLc for Carrier Networks also announced today is designed to provide equipment manufacturers and service providers with a telecom cloud infrastructure platform that accelerates the transition to NFV, yet also complies to the equipment practice, the power and thermal footprints of telecom rooms and central offices at the edge and in the core of the networks. The system offers unprecedented flexibility, scalability and operational efficiency running Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) on server-class processors while offering Five 9's availability and NEBS-3 compliance. Packetarium™ XLc is the first telco-grade cloud server of its class to extend NFV elasticity from the core to both edge and access equipment bringing higher processing densities, more memory for Virtual Network Function support and the scale-out headroom needed to deploy new services while meeting stringent service level agreements.

Both systems use common IP and building blocks to bring greater cost efficiencies and economies of scale which can then be passed on to customers. In addition to optimized compute modules, Packetarium™ XL systems have also been designed to simplify platform management and to integrate well with NFV software building blocks such as OpenStack, KVM, OVS and Intel® Data Plane Development Kit (Intel® DPDK).

With NFV Elasticity, the core is not the only place in the network where the new NFV ecosystem can create greater value. By opening the access network to VNF developers, operators and service providers can deliver and monetize a differentiating subscriber experience with context-related premium services that leverage the low-latency, high bandwidth and real-time radio network information of the network edge.

The PAC-6009 is the flagship model in the Packetarium™ XLc for Carrier Networks series and is designed to help both vendors and operators make the transition to NFV from legacy platforms such as ATCA at significantly lower deployment costs. While removing overhead and costly legacy features, Packetarium™ XLc preserves known best practices for platform management and fabric connectivity allowing customers to easily migrate to this new platform. The PAC-6009 supports up to 9 single or dual node processing blades connected to redundant switch and system control modules based on Broadcom's StrataXGS® Trident II silicon with separate dataplane and control/management plane fabrics. The system fits in just 6RU with a reduced depth of 400mm required for deployment in telecom rooms and central offices.

The first model in the Packetarium™ XLe for Enterprise series, the PAC-4010, packs up to 840 Gbps of I/O, more than 2 Tbps of switching capacity and up to 12 Intel® Xeon® E5-2600 v3 processors in just 4RU. The integrated switch & system control module is based on the high capacity Broadcom StrataXGS® Trident II switch family managed by an Intel® Atom™ C2000 processor and provides six hot swappable PHY mezzanine module (PMM) slots to accommodate a wide choice of 10 GbE, 40 GbE and 100 GbE ports with optional LAN bypass support.

Packetarium™ XLe systems will be available for lead customer evaluation in April 2015 with Packetarium™ XLc systems available for sampling in Q3/2015.
