Advantech Unveils Next Generation Server

High Performance and Carrier-Grade Server Range With Dual Socket Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2600 v3 to Be Showcased at IDF With FlowNIC Acceleration Based on Intel® DPDK

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwired - September 08, 2014) - Intel® Developers Forum - Advantech (TWSE: 2395) is demonstrating continued investment in its high performance server line with today's introduction of the CGS-6010 carrier-grade, NEBS-compliant server. The platform comes in a flexible and compact 2U package with a depth of just 20" making it ideal for deployment in telecom, carrier cloud and business-critical networks. The CGS-6010 has been designed to maximize processing performance with high-density, high throughput PCIe I/O and offload on adapters from Advantech and qualified ecosystem suppliers. It targets equipment manufacturers and providers who need flexible and reliable carrier-grade computer systems for maximum uptime with best-in-class combination of compute, networking and offload capabilities.

In addition the Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2600 v3 product family introduces many new capabilities in the areas of virtualization, security and power efficiency as well as DDR4 memory support to scale performance further. Lower power, high speed DDR4 memory technology is expected to provide up to 35% power savings compared to DDR3L and bring up to 50% performance boost in bandwidth. New virtualization features improve efficiency by reducing virtualization latency while Cache-QoS-monitoring optimizes VMM scheduling to improve throughput, facilitates load balancing to ease application migration, and helps monitor resources to improve charge back models based on VM usage.

The CGS-6010 incorporates the Intel® DH8950 chipset formerly codenamed "Coleto Creek" with on-chip Intel® QuickAssist acceleration. Six PCIe x8 slots take advantage of the processor's 40 PCIe Gen 3 lanes enabling faster paths to I/O and additional offload expansion. Complemented by the performance enhancements offered by the latest Intel® Xeon® processors, the security and compression offload capabilities offered by the Intel® DH8950 accelerator remove the need for special purpose processing hardware not compatible with virtualized and standard software frameworks such as Open VSwitch and Intel® DPDK.

In high bandwidth virtualized environments where load balancing and packet classification tasks are more cost-efficient when offloaded to an intelligent FlowNIC, Advantech and Netronome offer an integrated solution for increased packet forwarding performance fully integrated with OVS and Intel® DPDK. FlowNIC PCIe cards offer a highly programmable heterogeneous multicore architecture that tightly couples Netronome NFP-3000 and NFP-6000 flow processing cores with the CGS-6010's Intel® Xeon® processors for application and control plane processing over a high-speed virtualized PCIe datapath. The FlowNICs provide a platform to augment virtual switch implementations with hardware acceleration in Advantech servers for software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) designs.

SDN/NFV IDF Showcase
At IDF Advantech is demonstrating an SDN gateway function with Netronome which combines both NFV and SDN built upon a virtualized COTS server architecture using the CGS-6010 Carrier Grade Server connected to a network controlled through SDN. The gateway combines L2-L3 OpenFlow switching with higher-layer services on L4-L7. These include load balancer, firewall and IPS/IDS functions. The result is a L2-L7 gateway device which is x86-based leveraging network I/O acceleration to free up valuable x86 core cycles for application tasks. Higher-layer services are hosted as virtual network functions (VNFs) running on the CGS-6010 virtualized server architecture.

The gateway function being demonstrated illustrates how to connect a private or public cloud to the WAN and interconnect geographically disparate enterprises over the WAN. The solution can be used for several applications such as multi-tenant data center connectivity to an MPLS WAN under SDN OpenFlow 1.3 control, Enterprise-to-enterprise connectivity over the WAN also under SDN OpenFlow 1.3 control, and accelerated (OpenVSwitch) OVS with OVSDB and OF-Config support.

In the demonstration the SDN controller runs on an FWA-6510 Intel® Xeon® -based network appliance displaying a bird's-eye view of the whole network and dynamically steering traffic based on statistics gathered from the network. Third-party applications, management and orchestration functions running north of the SDN controller and in SDN are network-aware, allowing them to communicate their requirements policies to the network. At the same time, applications can monitor network state and adapt accordingly.

A FWA-6510 network appliance is used for traffic generation, an application by UK-based Argon Design Ltd running on a Netronome FlowNIC. The FWA-6510 also runs an Ryu SDN controller which controls the second Advantech node, the CGS-6010 server with dual Intel® Xeon® E5-2600 v3 processors hosting multiple network monitoring and security applications running under SDN control. Snort is used to demonstrate IDS/IPS functions and ntop is used for DPI and raw monitoring. Both are commonly used open source applications. The SDN controller is used to configure and control how flows are steered into the two applications, both of which are considered as virtualized networking functions (VNFs).

The demo is a proof-of-concept case for SDN and NFV and can also be tested by customers using Advantech's Remote Evaluation Service (RES).
