Advocate Health Care Receives National Recognition for Its Green Efforts

OAK BROOK, IL --(Marketwired - April 29, 2013) - Building on its long track record to help build healthier communities and improve the environment, Advocate Health Care is the only health system in Illinois featured as a success story in the first-ever, newly published Milestone Report by the Healthier Hospitals Initiative (HHI).

The report recognizes Advocate for significantly lowering costs and improving patient health by incorporating green sustainability initiatives into every day work.

HHI collected data from each of its 370-member hospitals in six key "Challenge" areas: Engaged Leadership, Healthier Food, Leaner Energy, Less Waste, Safer Chemicals, and Smarter Purchasing.

The report also highlights Advocate's successful environmental stewardship efforts in reducing the quantity of regulated medical waste and its online training program that educates employees on how they can help reduce waste and the health benefits of their efforts.

"Advocate's emphasis on environmental accountability aligns with our mission to serve our patients and families in a wholistic way," said Mary Larsen, manager of environmental stewardship at Advocate Health Care. "Being selected for this report is an affirmation that we are making progress in our efforts to make the best and most efficient use of our resources."

Advocate was also lauded for its online Environmental Stewardship Dashboard that allows green teams and executives to track waste and energy performance at each of its ten hospitals.

HHI is a national campaign designed to help improve the health of patients, employees and communities; reduce environmental impact by the sector; and to help reduce overall national health care costs through better public health. Advocate has been a member since the HHI campaign launched in April 2012.
