AER Responding to Waterfowl Impacts at Three Athabasca Oil Sands Area Tailings Ponds


CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - Nov. 5, 2014) - The Alberta Energy Regulator continues to respond to reports of waterfowl coming into contact with oilsands mining infrastructure, including tailings ponds, in the Athabasca oilsands area.

The AER received reports of 122 waterfowl deaths at Canadian Natural Resources Limited's Horizon tailings pond, Syncrude's Mildred Lake tailings pond, and Suncor Energy's tailings pond.

Weather in the Athabasca Oil Sands Area may have been a contributing factor to this regional event.

The AER is assessing the operators' waterfowl mitigation systems and whether the deterrent systems were operating correctly.
