AFL joins national day of action for the Fight for $15 campaign

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - April 14, 2016) - On Friday, April 15, volunteers from the Fight for $15 campaign will be meeting at the HUB Mall entrance of the University of Alberta handing out flyers and collecting more signatures on a petition in support of a $15-an-hour minimum wage.

"We're proud of the leadership that the government has been showing in the fight for a $15 minimum wage," Alberta Federation of Labour President Gil McGowan said, noting his support for the Fight For $15 campaign. "We know that there's an entrenched lobbying effort trying to dissuade our government from following through on this promise, which is why rallies like this one are important to show that a $15-an-hour minimum wage is still a priority to Albertans."

Currently, minimum wage workers in Alberta earn $11.20 an hour. Premier Rachel Notley has vowed that by 2018, Alberta's minimum wage will be $15.

"Increasing wages for our lowest-paid workers is good for the economy," McGowan said. "It puts money in the hands of some of the people who need it most, the people who will spend it, and the people who will support the local economy."
