Agfa HealthCare Named as Preferred Vendor in Two Quebec Diagnostic Imaging Projects

MORTSEL, BELGIUM--(CCNMatthews - May 23, 2006) - Attention health care editors and technology editors.

RUIS Laval and RUIS Sherbrooke PACS projects aimed at improving imaging services are to be among Canada's largest and most complex.

After a lengthy and detailed analysis of the Request for Proposal (RFP) submissions, the Quebec Ministry of Health and Social Services has directed Approvisionnement des deux Rives, the organization overseeing the RFP process, to begin negotiations with the preferred vendor, Agfa HealthCare. The goal of the negotiations is to develop a binding contract for the provision of PACS and image repositories for the Reseau Universitaire Integre de Sante (RUIS) Laval and RUIS Sherbrooke regions of Quebec.

RUIS-Laval serves more than 1.8 million people within a 400,000-square-kilometer region. The organization plans to use PACS to improve service to patients and doctors in remote areas, as well as address its shortage of radiologists. It offers radiologists and specialists the ability to collaborate across distances, as well as easy access to images online, enabling them to make faster diagnoses based on better information. The RUIS-Laval region will implement Agfa's IMPAX PACS locally at 51 sites along with a large-scale regional image repository to handle approximately 2.3 million patient exams per year, making it one of the largest regional PACS installations in Canada.

RUIS-Sherbrooke will use Agfa's IMPAX PACS as a regional imaging repository system to bring centralized archiving services to all 15 hospitals in the region, totaling 1.1 million diagnostic exams annually. Agfa's IMPAX repository will integrate with existing PACS systems from two other vendors, enabling the region to leverage its previous technology investments. Authorized users in the member hospitals will be able to access any image, at any time, from any location, regardless of where in the region the prior exams were acquired.
