Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Announces Creation of Beef and Cattle Trade Advisory Group

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Sept. 12, 2005) - To ensure ongoing, integrated approaches to beef and cattle specific trade issues, Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Andy Mitchell today announced the establishment of the Beef and Cattle Trade Advisory Group (BCTAG).

The creation of the BCTAG will facilitate the identification of trade priorities and discussions relating to market access and market development, as well as trade negotiations that are of interest to the Government of Canada and industry leaders.

"It's essential for the Canadian beef and cattle industry and the Government of Canada to work together to increase access to foreign markets, beyond that of the United States," said Minister Mitchell. "This advisory group will help in guiding industry and government resource commitments that permit us to achieve our goal of greater international market penetration."

This initiative builds upon the success of existing consultation activities, including the work of the Beef Value-Chain Roundtable and will guide the Government of Canada's heightened international advocacy efforts.

The BCTAG includes senior representatives from a number of key industry associations, including the Canada Beef Export Federation, Canadian Beef Breeds Council, Canadian Livestock Genetics Association, Canadian Cattlemen's Association, Canadian Meat Council, and other appropriate industry organizations. Along with AAFC, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and International Trade Canada will also participate in the Advisory Group discussions.
