Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Supports Expo Quebec's International Strategy

QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Aug. 29, 2009) - The Government of Canada is contributing $150,000 to Expo Québec in support of its international development strategy. The announcement was made today by the Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of National Revenue and Minister of State (Agriculture).

"More than ever, the Government of Canada recognizes that Expo Québec is a lucrative place of business, capable of sustaining growth in the agricultural industry and creating greater awareness of its know-how," said Minister Blackburn.

In 2009, Expo Québec is embarking on the fifth phase of its five-year plan aimed at supporting growth in the number of foreign buyers at the event site and at the same time increasing international sales of Canadian livestock. Already last year, the strategy was a success, culminating in the signing of a business agreement worth $10 million with Mexico and the exporting of 5,000 Quebec dairy cows to that country.

The Government of Canada thereby supports the Expo Québec objective to become a real hub for livestock trade and genetics in North America, through ongoing promotion and by each year attracting to the exhibition site a growing number of international business clients.

This year, buyers targeted by the organization as showing a strong interest in Canadian beef cattle include Russia, Serbia and Croatia. In the longer term, attention will be given to markets in Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, the United States, Mexico and Cuba.
The financial assistance will also help in presenting the popular activity Showcase of Canadian Culinary Riches, which will feature a local product from a Canadian province or territory each day.

Financial support from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada is made possible through the AgriMarketing Program, which aims to improve the marketing capabilities and the competitiveness of the Canadian agriculture, agri-food, fish and seafood sectors.
