AGRIS Solar Supports Province's Directive on Capacity Constrained Solar Projects

CHATHAM, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 24, 2011) - AGRIS Solar, a 700-member solar co-operative developing projects in farming and rural communities throughout southwestern Ontario, applauded the Ontario Minister of Energy's directive as a means for getting capacity constrained solar generators connected.

The Ontario Minister of Energy, the Honourable Brad Duguid announced, via a directive to the Ontario Power Authority that any constrained participant in the microFIT program is permitted to relocate their constrained project to another location in Ontario that is not capacity constrained.

"Minister Duguid's announcement allowed us to bring forward a viable solution for our constrained members. We applaud Minister Duguid and the Premier's efforts to work with all stakeholders and find a meaningful solution. Relocating constrained projects is innovative and we can make it work for our members," says David Malott, board chair of AGRIS Solar Co-operative.

The directive also allows for up to 50 constrained conditional offers to be consolidated into one combined project while maintaining the existing rate that will be paid for electricity generated. The co-operative is already reviewing several potential properties to consolidate groups of 50 units into "solar gardens". Members should expect the same financial returns that they had originally anticipated, the only difference being the solar array will not be on the member's property.

The co-operative is also reviewing ways and means of assisting all constrained microFIT contract holders in their effort to connect to the grid, whether they have constructed or not. The co-operative's board of directors expects to make an announcement regarding this in the upcoming weeks. "Through months of consultation with the provincial agencies and the McGuinty government to solve the constraint issue for our own membership, we discovered that this solution would also work for constrained projects outside our co-operative," added Malott.
