Ahura Scientific FirstDefender Part of Security Preparations for Pope's Recent U.S. Visit

Yonkers, New York Fire Department Turns to Leading Chemical Identification Instrument for First Response Readiness and Security

WILMINGTON, MA--(Marketwire - April 22, 2008) - Ahura Scientific, Inc., a leader in rugged, ultra-compact handheld instruments for chemical identification, announced today that the Yonkers, New York Fire Department included its FirstDefender® instrument among the security response tools assembled in preparation for the recent visit of Pope Benedict XVI to the city. As users of Ahura Scientific's chemical identification product in the field since 2006, the Yonkers Fire Department has already realized the benefits of quickly and accurately identifying unknown chemicals and liquids. As such, at the Fire Department's request, Ahura Scientific provided additional instruments to support the expanded security detail throughout the course of the Pope's visit.

The City of Yonkers HazMat Task Force and the Police Emergency Services Unit have come to rely on the ease-of-use and dependability of Ahura Scientific's FirstDefender in their daily operations. FirstDefender is one of both organizations' go to instruments for peace of mind when dealing with unknowns and confirming the identification liquids and solids.

"In order to make the Pope's visit a successful and, more importantly, an uneventful one, we had to have the right tools in the rare chance our city needed to respond," said William Fitzpatrick, Chief of Operations, Yonkers Fire Department. "The company's donation of additional units for the duration of the Pope's stay in New York enabled us to protect our community and be adequately prepared in the event we faced any possible chemical threats."

Using Raman spectroscopy, FirstDefender enables first responders to rapidly identify unknown solids and liquids on-site, including chemical warfare agents, white powders, toxic industrial chemicals (TICs) and explosives, which in turn reduces the need to unnecessarily alarm the public and ensures citizens' safety.

"We understood just how important it was for the City of Yonkers to be confident in its ability to respond to a multitude of possible threats," said Doug Kahn, chairman and CEO of Ahura Scientific, Inc. "We're pleased we were able to assist in the preparations for the Pope's visit and ensure both his safety and that of the many visitors who came to see him."
