AlarmForce Reports Q4 2015 Financial Results

Q4 Highlights

  • Revenue of $14.4 million, net income of $1.3 million, diluted EPS of $0.12

  • Recurring monthly revenue of $4.48 million, up by 7% (or 3% excluding the effect of foreign exchange)

  • EBITDA excluding one-time items of $3.7 million, down 12% from the comparable period in 2014

  • Gross additions of 5,850, up 11% from the same period in prior year

  • ARPU for existing subscribers was $31.07 for Q4, a 7% increase (3% excluding the effect of foreign exchange) over 2014

  • ARPU for new subscribers was $35.69, an increase of 10% (or 5% excluding the effect of foreign exchange) over 2014

  • Aged accounts receivable reassessment completed resulting in non-cash write offs for rental equipment and outstanding receivables of approximately $1 million and the cancellation of 5,980 subscribers. This represented a significant portion of the approximate 9,000 cancellations in the quarter and were originated over the prior 3 years

Full Year Highlights

  • Revenue of $56.1 million, net income of $5.0 million, diluted EPS of $0.43

  • EBITDA decreased by 27% or $4.2 million year-over-year to $11.7 million driven by one-time, non-recurring items (EBITDA of $15.4 million excluding one-time items compared to $15.9 million in 2014)

  • Extraordinary items, including previously disclosed write-downs and non-recurring G&A expenses related to the change in senior management totalled $3.7 million for the year or $2.7 million on a tax affected basis representing $0.24 per share

  • Gross new subscriber additions were over 22,700 for the year, about 0.3% higher than 2014 reversing a three year trend of year over year decreases in gross additions

  • New subscriber adoption rates for add-on services were: 65% for CellWave, 40% for AlarmForce Connect, 12% for Video Relay and 71% for Fall Sensors with our AlarmCare product

  • Total subscribers decreased by 500 for 2015 from 144,700 to 144,200, with net subscriber growth unfavourably impacted by the aged accounts receivable reassessment undertaken during Q4 which resulted in the cancellation of 5,980 subscribers from the backlog identified during Q3 in addition to normal course cancellations

Q4 Non-Recurring Items

During Q4, we concluded our reassessment of the aged accounts receivable with the following impact:

  • Aged Accounts Receivable
    • With our Q3 results, we announced that we had identified issues related to the collectability of some of our aged accounts receivables. Following a thorough, file-by-file review of the identified backlog at that time, we cancelled 5,980 subscribers during Q4. While a portion would have been captured in our normal course cancellations, we estimate that approximately 4,300 accelerated cancellations were in excess of typical quarterly cancellation rates
    • The financial impact of this was non-cash write downs totalling approximately $1 million comprised of a combination of accounts receivable ($0.3 million) and rental equipment ($0.8 million)

The total impact of extraordinary items during Q4 was approximately $1.2 million bringing the YTD total of non-recurring expenses to $3.7 million. These were largely comprised of one-time costs associated with higher than normal legal fees and settlements, costs associated with the change in management including severance and recruitment expenses and non-cash write-downs associated the aged accounts receivable assessment and the previously announced cancellation of the in-house development of a second generation camera.

US Market Discussion

During Q4 and after careful analysis, we concluded that marketing investments in certain US markets have not generated the returns that are expected - and necessary - to justify the capital investment. We will continue to service all of the US markets that we are in, but we will be focusing our marketing efforts in selected markets to improve our metrics and bring them more in line with the performance of our Canadian operations. While we do expect the rate of growth from our US markets will be impacted from the reduction in marketing spend, we are working to replace this lost growth with new initiatives in Canada. These initiatives will leverage and build our brand recognition to further attract and retain AlarmForce customers.

Toronto, Ontario, January 21, 2016 - For the fiscal year ended October 31, 2015, AlarmForce Industries (TSX:AF) reported revenues of $56.1 million. Net income fell by 36% or $2.8 million year-over-year, driven by one-time non-recurring items totalling $ 3.7 million. As a result, diluted earnings per share were $0.43 in 2015 down from $0.65 during 2014.

Total revenues for 2015 increased to $56.1 million vs. $52.6 million in 2014, or growth of 7% (3% in constant currency). Recurring monthly revenue (RMR) increased to $4.48 million from $4.20 million at the end of 2014, or 7% (3% excluding the effect of foreign exchange). Cash flow from operations decreased from $11.8 million to $9.0 million, or 24% driven by one-time items in the second half of the year related to the change in management.

Other Events

During 2015, the Company repurchased a total of 113,100 common shares for cancellation under the normal course issuer bid for a total cost of $1.3 million and has paid dividends totalling $1.7 million. During the fourth-quarter, $1.5 million was returned to shareholders through the normal course issuer bid and dividends paid. AlarmForce made the decision to repurchase shares as they were available at a price that the Company believes to be below the underlying intrinsic value of the Company.
