Alberta and Mazatlan, Mexico a Great Match

Albertans' love affair with Mazatlan runs from Grande Prairie to Canmore and Calgary to Sherwood Park. The Mexican resort city loves Albertans right back.

MAZATLAN, MEXICO--(Marketwire - April 19, 2011) - Grande Prairie Mayor Bill Given recently joined the Swan City Rotary Club on a visit to Mazatlan that reaffirmed links with its sister city. A Mazatlan representative will travel to Grande Prairie in May to further explore mutually beneficial ways to engage. Beyond local governments, Albertans of all ages travel to Mazatlan for different reasons. Such is the case of Canmore's Idol talent show winner Jessica Brewin, Calgarian triathlete Jordan Bryden and Sherwood Park's Bruce and Anne-Marie Brand.

Upon winning 2011 Canmore Idol, a local talent show, Jessica Brewin told the Canmore Leader that the prize money would be put toward an upcoming trip to Mazatlan. Upon hearing this, the Mazatlan Tourism Trust reached out to Jessica and offered her tickets to a Mexican Fiesta and a Spa treatment as a congratulatory gift. "We are avid supporters of community arts and culture locally and internationally," said Julio Birrueta, Spokesperson for the Mazatlan Tourism Trust. "Our gift is a way of thanking Jessica for choosing to celebrate her win in Mazatlan." Upon returning to Canmore Jessica expressed her appreciation. "It was a wonderful vacation and I can't wait to go back," she said.

Triathlete Jordan Bryden, who grew up in Airdrie and now trains in Calgary, competed in the Gran Pacific Triathlon this month. Bryden placed 8th in the ITU Triathlon Pan American Cup that is part of the event's framework. The Gran Pacific is one of many sporting events that attract Canadians to the outdoors destination.

Between 120,000 and 130,000 Canadians visit Mazatlan each year. Many are loyal yearly visitors and approximately 2500 have made Mazatlan their winter home. In an article published by Grande Prairie's Herald Tribune, Mayor Given expressed he felt "100% safe and comfortable" and that he met a "number of Canadians that live in the area and who have been going to Mazatlan for many, many years". Bruce and Anne-Marie Brand from Sherwood Park are two valued members of this community. The couple has wintered in Mazatlan for over 25 years.

"Mazatlan is proud to be a preferred destination for Albertans," noted Birrueta. "We look forward seeing our Canadian friends during the following months. WestJet will continue operating its direct flights from Calgary and Vancouver through the summer," he concluded.
