CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - Dec. 6, 2013) - Alberta Barley is confident that an investment by the Federal government will go a long way towards establishing a new market for barley farmers.

Today, Alberta Barley was announced as the recipient of $314,800 under the AgriMarketing Program, a five-year (2013-2018), $341-million program, under Growing Forward 2. Member of Parliament Blake Richards made the announcement today on behalf of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Minister Gerry Ritz at Alberta Barley's annual general meeting in Banff.
Among its several market outreach initiatives, Alberta Barley will use the AgriMarketing Program funding to increase the industry's capacity to market barley products to meet the growing demand for healthy foods.
Barley recently received approval from Health Canada for a health food claim, which concluded that daily consumption of barley helps to reduce blood cholesterol, a risk factor for heart disease.
"It's time for barley to be recognized for its exceptional health benefits and versatility," said Alberta Barley's Market Development Manager and food spokesperson, Linda Whitworth.
"Our goal is to work with health professionals around the world to get the word out about this homegrown superfood."
