Alberta Medical Association Presents Its 2009 Medal of Honor to the Family of Walter Doll

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Sept. 24, 2009) - The Alberta Medical Association (AMA) will award its 2009 Medal of Honor to Walter Doll for his commitment to improving the quality of health care for Albertans. Mr. Doll, a long-time champion for health care for the citizens of Fairview, Alberta, passed away on July 9, 2009, at the age of 74.

The award, which will be presented posthumously during the AMA's annual Representative Forum, September 25, in Calgary, is awarded to a non-physician who has made outstanding personal contributions to the people in Alberta and who has contributed to the advancement of medical research, medical education, health care organization, health education and/or health promotion to the public. Mr. Doll is one of only two Medal of Honor recipients for 2009. Mr. Doll's family will accept the award.

A former councillor and reeve for the Town of Fairview, Mr. Doll worked tirelessly to ensure the citizens of Fairview have access to quality health care. Over the past 23 years, Mr. Doll dedicated countless hours to attracting and retaining medical staff, and improving hospital facilities, equipment and services within the community. He was instrumental in securing funding and support for the building of the Fairview Health Complex, and lobbied tirelessly for the funds required for its expansion. Mr. Doll also worked to improve the infrastructure and economy of the Town of Fairview, proposing a rail link between Fairview and Rycroft and advocating for a hydro-dam at Dunvegan.

Born and raised in the Fairview area, Mr. Doll was a life-long farmer and an impassioned community champion, serving in various municipal government roles and on the boards of several agricultural associations and organizations. In the nomination package for the AMA's Medal of Honor, colleagues, friends and politicians spoke of both his love for the community of Fairview and his commitment to improving health care for its citizens.

"We are saddened by Mr. Doll's passing and we wish to extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and the people of Fairview," said AMA President Dr. Noel W. Grisdale. "We are pleased to be able to recognize Mr. Doll with the Medal and Honor and to have the opportunity to tell our members and other Albertans about his exceptional contributions."
