Alberta Soccer Association Ruling on Hijab

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Nov. 30, 2007) - In light of the recent soccer game and decision involving the wearing of Hijabs, the Alberta Soccer Association (ASA) has made a ruling on the issue. The ASA has advised the Calgary Minor Soccer Association of the following:

"This is to advise all soccer referees within the jurisdiction of the Alberta Soccer Association that the Board of Directors of the Alberta Soccer Association has made an interim decision that the head covering referred to as a 'Hijab' will not be allowed to be worn during soccer games.

The Board of Directors deems that the 'Hijab' is not worn for the purpose of physical protection and this headgear/head covering does pose a danger to both the player wearing this item of clothing and to other players.

The Board of Directors has initiated a thorough review of this issue and once completed, it will make a final ruling."

As the Alberta Soccer Association is the governing body for Soccer in Alberta, the Calgary Minor Soccer Association must follow the Rules and Regulations as established by the ASA.
