Alderwoods Group Collects 'Tins For The Bin' with Winnipeg Harvest

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA--(CCNMatthews - May 30, 2006) -

Food and coin drive aims to help thousands of hungry in our community

Four Alderwoods Group locations, Thomson Funeral Home, Green Acres Funeral Home, Klassen Funeral Home and Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home and Cemetery are pleased to announce their 2nd annual major food drive campaign to assist Winnipeg Harvest and people in our community who are hungry. Each of these four Winnipeg locations will host alternating food collection events during the morning commute on Tuesdays from 6:30 am - 8:30 am for the month of June.

"We appreciate the community's overwhelming support last year with over 55,000 pounds of food donated and we look forward to their support this year to top that number. The generosity from the community was truly heartfelt and it was particularly rewarding to hear from those who were proud to give back to a service they were once in need of," said Barry Tuck, Alderwoods Group Market Growth Manager for Winnipeg.

Winnipeg Harvest provides emergency food to 39,265 people each month. Almost half are children.

"It is especially fitting that the first Alderwoods food drive will be held on Tuesday, June 6 which is Canada's first National Hunger Awareness Day," said David Northcott, Executive Coordinator of Winnipeg Harvest. "People and their families are hurting. These are families with children, seniors, our neighbours and they need our help. The commitment of the Alderwoods managers - Barry Tuck, Ken Goertzen, Jean-Guy Mercier, Michael Gibbens and Cliff Binnie - is inspiring, as is the efforts of their staff. We could not meet our mission without this kind of community partnership."

People are encouraged to drop off a "Tin for the Bin" and receive a free newspaper courtesy of the Winnipeg Free Press as a token of appreciation for their donation. Peak of the Market has generously agreed to match all donations with fresh Manitoba produce, pound for pound. Winnipeg Harvest will be present to accept monetary donations and issue tax receipts at each of the four food collection locations.
