Alderwoods Group Food Drive Collects Over 55,000 Lbs Of Food For Winnipeg Harvest

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA--(CCNMatthews - June 29, 2005) - Alderwoods Group is pleased to present over 55,000 lbs of food to Winnipeg Harvest, a not-for-profit food bank, from its "Tin for the Bin" food drive campaign.

During the month of June, four Alderwoods Group locations - Klassen Funeral Home, Thomson Funeral Home, Green Acres Funeral Home and Cemetery and Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home and Cemetery - took turns welcoming donations from community members every Tuesday morning, between 6:30 am and 9:30 am.

As a token of appreciation, community members who dropped off a "Tin for the Bin" received a free Robin's Donuts coffee and Winnipeg Free Press.

Alderwoods Group met its goal of collecting thousands of food items for users of the local food bank with the support of Peak of the Market, one of Canada's premier grower-owned vegetable suppliers, who matched all donations pound for pound with fresh produce.

"The community has shown tremendous support for our "Tin for the Bin" food drive campaign," said Ken Goertzen, Location Manager, Thomson "In The Park" Funeral Home and Cemetery. "On behalf of all four locations we would like to thank the public in joining us in our commitment to community values and providing support to Winnipeg Harvest and their cause of helping people who are in crisis."

As members of Alderwoods Group, funeral homes and cemeteries host events throughout the year and participate in the communities in which they serve.

Winnipeg Harvest provides emergency food to 36,871 people each month. Almost half are children.

"We are thrilled with the energy and commitment of all the Alderwood staff who pitched in to make this inaugural food drive such a success story," says Carol Ellerbeck, Executive Coordinator of Winnipeg Harvest. "Unfortunately hunger does not take a holiday in our community and the efforts of Thompson Funeral Home, Klassen Funeral Home, Thompson In the Park and Green Acres goes a long way in helping us meet the needs of people who require emergency food assistance."
