Alderwoods Group Launches "Tin for the Bin" in Support of South Carolina Food Banks

Food Drive Aims to Collect Thousands of Items for Users of Local Food Banks

LEXINGTON, SC -- (MARKET WIRE) -- November 3, 2005 -- Alderwoods Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: AWGI) funeral homes and cemeteries throughout the state of South Carolina are pleased to launch "Tin for the Bin" -- a food drive in support of food banks in the communities they serve.

Each participating location will offer their premises as a drop-off point for food collection from November 7-18, 2005, as well as host a drive-thru on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays during the two-week campaign from 7am - 9am. Community members making a donation at the drive-thru will receive a complimentary coffee and newspaper or tote bag as a token of appreciation.

"We are happy to be able to support local food banks and their cause of helping people who are in crisis," said Gary Toye, Alderwoods Group's Regional General Manager for the Carolinas. "Offering our premises as a drop-off point for food collection is an expression of our commitment to community values and we look forward to a successful campaign."

Recipient food banks include Lexington Interfaith Community Services of Lexington, HOPE of Lancaster, Soup Day at Bethel United Methodist Church of Rock Hill, Cherokee Children's Home of Gaffney and Harvest Hope Food Bank of Florence.

According to the Center on Hunger and Poverty, South Carolina ranks fifth in the top 10 states for household food insecurity and hunger. In fact, over the last three years, 14.8 percent of households in South Carolina are food insecure due to various reasons such as lack of financial resources, 5.5 percent of which are also classified as severely hungry and at increased risk of malnutrition.
