Alex Scott Phone Bank Raises More Than $891,000 in Pledges for Pediatric Cancer Research

Donations up 28 Percent Despite Economy

PHILADELPHIA, PA--(Marketwire - June 11, 2009) - The "Alex Scott Phone Bank," a 15-hour fundraiser held on CBS 3 today to raise funds for the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, has generated $891,740 in pledges for pediatric cancer research thanks to corporate sponsors and Delaware Valley television viewers. CBS 3's phone lines were busy all day as viewers flooded the station with individual pledges ranging from $1 to $10,000.

Despite the downturn in the economy, donations to the third annual fundraiser were up 28 percent over last year's total of $696,090. In addition to contributions from viewers, area businesses also contributed to the fundraiser with Applebee's leading the pack with a $275,000 pledge. Other corporate contributors included Just Born Candies, the makers of PEEPS, Country Time Lemonade, Elyse Ryan Jewelry, USA Beverage and TD Bank.

CBS 3 took the unusual step of breaking format to air special segments from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. The station made the time available in newscasts, in commercial break time and by pre-empting some of its syndicated programming.

CBS 3's Chris May, Susan Barnett, Pat Ciarrocchi, Liz Keptner, Kathy Orr, and Stephanie Stahl spearheaded the effort to raise funds for the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, a unique charity that evolved from the front yard lemonade stand of four-year-old Alexandra Scott, which, since her passing in 2004, has blossomed into a nationwide fundraising movement to find a cure for childhood cancer. Alex's parents, Liz and Jay Scott, along with other CBS 3 personalities, joined the hosts for the annual event as did personalities from the CBS Radio stations locally.

The Alex Scott Phone Bank kicks off Lemonade Days 2008 (June 12-14) when thousands of people across the country will take a stand against pediatric cancer by hosting lemonade stands of their own.

"The CBS family is proud to be the host and partner for such a special event," says President and General Manager Jon Hitchcock. "This is television at its best -- bringing people together to do good in the community."

"Despite the current state of the economy, we are continually amazed by the outpouring of generosity from Philadelphians and the Delaware Valley," says Liz Scott, Alex's mother. "It is that support that has made this CBS 3 fundraiser the most successful to date."

In honor of Lemonade Days Weekend, "Alex Scott: A Stand for Hope," a moving half hour special that tells Alex's story through her parents, her medical team at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and many of the people who were touched by her life, will also air Saturday, June 13th at 7 p.m. on CBS 3 and at 10:30 p.m. on The CW Philly. The show will be rebroadcast on Sunday, June 14th at 11 a.m. on CBS 3.

CBS 3 acknowledges the support of Toyota, Applebee's and The Malvern School in making this special fundraising effort possible. CBS 3 (KYW-TV) and The CW Philly 57 (WPSG-TV) are part of CBS Television Stations, a division of CBS Corporation.
