All Hallows Eve? Movember's Eve for Men's Health

It's Movember-Register at and grow a moustache for men's health

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 31, 2011) - Today isn't just Halloween, it's the eve of Movember, the global moustache charity event for men's health. Once the sugar high has worn off, you'll notice tens of thousands of moustaches sprouting up across the country to raise awareness and funds for men's health, specifically prostate cancer. The time is now to register at, grow a Mo and help to change the face of men's health.

Every Movember, the month formerly known as November, men register at, start the month clean-shaven and grow a moustache for 30 days. The moustache becomes the hairy ribbon for men's health and the guys growing them become walking, talking billboards for the cause. Last year, Canadians embraced the moustache, with nearly 119,000 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas raising $22.3 million for Movember's Canadian men's health partner, Prostate Cancer Canada.

"It is so amazing to see how Canadian's have embraced the Movember movement," said Adam Garone, CEO and Co-Founder of Movember. "Not only by the phenomenal participation by Mo Bros and Mo Sistas across the country, but making strides in awareness and survivorship programs, ground-breaking research, and getting people to have important conversations about their health."

Movember funds are hard at work. Thanks to support of their Mo Bros and Mo Sistas, Movember is funding a number of prolific outcomes in Canada, including:

  • CPC Gene – The prostate cancer genome mapping project, providing the technology to crack the genetic code for individual men to understand their risk and best treatment for prostate cancer.

  • PCCN - The Prostate Cancer Canada Network is a volunteer based, prostate cancer support group, run by prostate cancer survivors who helps men diagnosed with this disease.

  • Clinician Scientist Awards - These are awards given to clinician scientists who are working with laboratory research with the aim of turning this research into potential clinical treatments. This work is the segue between research and application and a crucial stage in providing better and more specific treatments.

  • Global Action Plan (GAP) – Identifying an opportunity to accelerate research outcomes through collaboration, the Movember Foundation has established the Global Action Plan. GAP has two program elements- an annual global collaborative research project as well as Promoveo, a global, online community for prostate cancer researchers, clinicians and organizations to share information and findings.

"Prostate Cancer is 90 per cent curable if detected in the earliest stages," said Steve Jones, CEO and President, Prostate Cancer Canada. "Thanks to Movember more conversations are being had about men's health and the moustache is allowing us to be well positioned to eliminate this disease by research, education, awareness and support."

Getting involved in Movember is simple - men and women register to join the campaign at Whether on their own or as part of a team, they have the month of November to grow and show their Mo or support, in the case of the women. Friends, family, and colleagues can show their support by sponsoring the Mo-growing efforts. Women who register are key to the campaign's success. They act as ambassadors for the Mo, spreading the word about men's health and showing their support for the men in their life.

Participants have the opportunity to repurpose their Halloween costumes at the end-of-Movember Gala Partés to celebrate their journey. Supporters come dressed in costume to complement their or a friend's moustache. These events see many impersonators, the likes of Tom Selleck, Burt Reynolds, Mike Ditka, and Hulk Hogan, among others.

Movember's 2011 Canadian major partners include Mercedes-Benz Canada, and Schick.
