ALLERGY ALERT - UNDECLARED MILK WHEAT CRACKERS - national

The manufacturer, Beta Brands Limited, London, Ontario, 2 products recalled Attention: Assignment Editor, Food/Beverage Editor, Health/Medical Editor, News Editor OTTAWA ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Sept. 16, 2005) - Audio clips available at www.inspection.gc.ca/english/direct/media/.

OTTAWA, September 16, 2005 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Beta Brands Limited are warning people with allergies to milk not to consume the CO-OP GOLD Wheat crackers with wheat germ described below. The affected products may contain milk protein which is not declared on the label.

The following products, sold in 225g cartons, are affected by this alert:

Product # 1 - CO-OP GOLD Wheat crackers with wheat germ 50 % less salt
UPC - 0 57316 08958 8
Lot codes

44131, 44511, 50241, 50741, 51911, 52341

Product # 2 - CO-OP GOLD Wheat crackers with wheat germ
UPC - 0 57316 08956 4

(codes are embossed on the tab that opens the carton) - 43541, 44323, 44721, 45132, 51021, 51951, 52341.

The affected products have been distributed nationally.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

Consumption of these products may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction in persons with allergies to milk protein.

The manufacturer, Beta Brands Limited, London, Ontario, is voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
