Alliant Insurance Services Launches Online Program Designed to Improve Corporate Governance of Healthcare Organizations

Developed by Alliant Healthcare Solutions and Kalorama Partners, BoardWise Program Kicks Off With Online Webinar Series April 5-19

NEWPORT BEACH, CA--(Marketwire - April 5, 2011) - BoardWise, an online education program designed to expand the governance knowledge of directors, trustees, and other leaders of healthcare organizations, has been publicly launched by Alliant Healthcare Solutions, the national healthcare practice of Alliant Insurance Services (, in partnership with Kalorama Partners, a leading consultant in corporate governance issues. The initial series of online webinars takes place April 5-19.

Presented by HealthStream, a leading provider of e-learning and continuing education solutions for the healthcare industry, the webinars in the BoardWise Healthcare Director and Executive Education Series are led by top subject matter experts in specific areas of corporate governance pertaining to diversified providers in the healthcare industry.

Harvey Pitt, former chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and now CEO of Washington, D.C.-based Kalorama Partners, said there is a tremendous need for greater corporate governance education in the healthcare industry today.

According to Pitt, who as SEC chairman played a key role in the adoption of all Sarbanes-Oxley Act rules following passage of the legislation in 2002, "The increasingly complex challenges that healthcare organizations face today -- including corporate accountability and transparency, Sarbanes-Oxley legislation, IRS regulations, pressure from creditors and bond insurers, activist state attorneys general, and increased media scrutiny -- demand that board members have much greater expertise in corporate governance."

James Fasone, Senior Vice President at Alliant Insurance Services who is spearheading the BoardWise program, said the need for increased governance expertise by corporate healthcare leaders is illustrated by industry studies that show a surprisingly high percentage of board members recognize they lack strong financial, legal, and business operations knowledge.

"It's alarming that those who oversee the operations of organizations faced with the financial and legal complexities of the healthcare industry aren't better prepared to deal with governance issues," he said. "The objective of BoardWise is to facilitate better decision-making by board members, which not only reduces exposure to inherent business risk -- and potentially costly liability -- but also provides organizations with a meaningful competitive edge."

Tom Corbett, Chief Executive Officer of Alliant Insurance Services, said the BoardWise program is an example of the broad-based and innovative approach Alliant Insurance Services takes in serving specialty industries like healthcare.

"BoardWise was conceived as a way to benefit the entire spectrum of large healthcare organizations, including publicly traded, not-for-profit, and private entities," he commented. "Our healthcare team recognized the growing governance challenges confronting board members of these organizations and set out to develop a solution that would help them as directors and truly benefit the healthcare industry as a whole. Not only will BoardWise benefit many of our company's current healthcare clients, it helps to position Alliant as a company with an uncommon depth of industry knowledge, problem-solving expertise, and commitment to improving industry standards."

The BoardWise program provides healthcare directors and managers with a wide range of relevant live and recorded webinars that cover the full gamut of high-level content necessary to keep abreast of healthcare hot topics. More than 40 modules cover an array of management skills -- from running a meeting to strategy development to finance essentials. Online bookmarks let users quickly revisit specific sections for future reference.

For the initial webinar series, HealthStream is offering one hour of pre-approved Category II (non-ACHE) continuing education credit for completion of each webinar toward advancement or recertification in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
