Almas Jiwani, President of UN Women Canada National Committee, will be a distinguished speaker at The Women's International Trade Fair (SIFEM) on Monday June 18, 2012, to discuss "The place of women in legal decisions and their contribution to the establishment of human rights." The trade fair aims to encourage women's initiatives at the local, national and international levels to improve social cohesion and contribute to the prominence of women in the sectors of influence represented at SIFEM 2012, within a perspective of cooperation, mutual assistance and global solidarity among women. The event brings together 5 continents, 150 States, 1,500 exhibitors and over 500,000 participants are expected. SIFEM will also present Jiwani with a special award during the Gala Dinner on June 21, to celebrate her life-long dedication to advancing gender equality and the many successes she has achieved throughout her service career.

"I am thrilled to be invited to speak at such a prestigious event that brings together women from around the world and from so many industries," says Jiwani. "I look forward to engaging with participants to raise awareness of the importance of including women in the formal workforce and the processes of legal decision-making. I hope to demonstrate that the struggle is universal, as for women's rights are fundamentally human rights," she adds.

Théodore Dovi-Akué, SIFEM's Chief Executive Officer, stated, "We are honoured to welcome this great woman, Almas Jiwani, to present her views and ideas about equality and the place of women in society." Commenting on Jiwani's achievements, Dovi-Akué referred to "Jiwani's immense contribution to humanitarian work. Ms. Jiwani has shown exceptional leadership in regional, national, and international charitable and humanitarian organizations. She has helped women living in developed and developing countries enter the workforce as entrepreneurs and producers, strengthening their communities' economic capacity. She has also contributed to improved governance and leadership efforts worldwide, advocating for the participation of women in all aspects of decision-making processes, from voting to running for office. In addition, she is constantly working toward eradicating all forms of violence against women. She is a prime example of a successful woman; it is for these, and many other reasons that SIFEM is pleased to pay special standing ovation tribute to Ms. Jiwani during our opening plenary, and present her with a special Tribute award at our Gala Dinner."

SIFEM is a global event that centers around socio-economic and women's concerns and enables women to share their experiences and build on skills and expertise from all professions. The trade fair will be held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre from June 17-23, 2012. This unique event covers everything required for the development and well-being of today's woman.
