Almas Jiwani, President of UN Women National Committee Canada, to Attend the 2nd Annual Family Day Walkathon for Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 15, 2012) - This Family Day Monday, February 20, Ms. Almas Jiwani will join the ICNA (Peel Chapter) and Mississauga Muslim Community in a walkathon to raise funds for the local Credit Valley Hospital. Ms. Jiwani will walk as a dignitary alongside Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion and MP Jim Karygiannis of Scarborough-Agincourt and dignitaries from municipal and provincial legislatures.

"The Mississauga Muslim Community greatly appreciate the support of UN Women Canada and especially her President Ms Almas Jiwani, for this noble cause of raising awareness about the challenges faced by families and helping our healthcare system. We look forward to a long term relationship of working together in helping the families and supporting the noble causes," said A. Q. Mufti, Family Day Walkathon Coordinator.

Last year's event raised $50,000 for the Credit Valley Hospital Foundation. Besides raising funds for the charity, the walkathon is intended to emphasize the importance of family life through awareness-raising and support for families facing social challenges such as divorce, single parenthood, domestic violence, and other issues. This year's theme for the event is "Our Seniors," inviting speakers to discuss respect for seniors and their responsibilities and inviting us to honor the role of our seniors in the family and society.

"Seniors are at the centre of our communities, and it is important that we take the time to recognize the role that they play in sharing and teaching personal and community values," said Ms. Jiwani. "I am honored to be attending this event to pay tribute to the seniors in this community while raising money for the hospital Foundation."

All are invited to attend the event this Family Day. The walkathon will take place on Monday February 20th from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm at 300 City Centre Drive in Mississauga.
