The Pan Am Flame is a symbol of unity among the 41 nations that make up the Pan American Sports Organization. On June 30th the Pan Am flame stood for more than that when Almas Jiwani passed the flame as a torchbearer.
"Sexist attitudes and stereotypes plague women's sports but international sporting events like the Pan Am Games not only unite nations, they act as a catalyst for gender equality," said Almas Jiwani, after her torch relay.
"Young girls get a spark of inspiration from the female athletes on the field and on the podium. This spark can spread from the field of play to the boardroom, from early years and throughout her life," said Almas Jiawani. "The life long impact of the Games on gender equality is monumental and I am thrilled to have been part of lighting the flame."
