Alumni Sprints Successfully Launches First Annual Regatta

Rowers Descend on Greenwich in a Spirit of Collaboration

GREENWICH, CT--(Marketwired - April 28, 2013) - Alumni rowers made history in Greenwich Cove on April 27th, by inaugurating the first USRowing-sanctioned regatta specifically devoted to alumni racing.

"Athletes who ranged in age from 22 to 72 joined us from Wisconsin, Washington, DC, Boston, and other locations," said Sydney Williams, the chairman of Alumni Sprints. "Our groundbreaking event boasted perfect conditions, great racing and enthusiastic participation."

Alumni Sprints welcomed more than a hundred alumni of Boston University, Brown, Wisconsin, Williams, Oxford, Cambridge, Princeton, Dartmouth, Northeastern, Duke, the United States Military Academy, Yale, Georgetown, and New Zealand's University of Otago, all proudly displaying school colors, in singles, doubles, fours, and eights racing.

Dartmouth's Ever Green Boat Club and Princeton's Fat Cats each won five events. Brown, Oxford, Cambridge, and Boston University alumni also won events. In the regatta's featured race, the Men's Open Eight, Northeastern alumni were victorious in a photo finish, edging out Ever Green Boat Club by only four-tenths of a second.  For its achievement across all events, Ever Green Boat Club was awarded the first Alumni Sprints Team Points Trophy.

"Select groups and individuals stepped up to support us in big ways," added Mr. Williams. "In particular I'd like to single out Todd Coffin, Dmitri Vlasov, Michael Finkbeiner, David Stonehill, Skip Parker, Kim Crocco, Saman Majd, and Ian Macmillan for their tireless behind-the-scenes effort in making this work. Without these individuals our regatta could never have happened.

"Special thanks also go out to the Town of Greenwich Department of Parks and Recreation, Source Capital, Old Greenwich Yacht Club, Riverside Yacht Club, Friends of Dartmouth Rowing, Tom Bohrer and the Boston University men's crew, Finish Line Shell Repair, WinTech Racing, Columbia men's crew, Brunswick School, Convent of the Sacred Heart School, and RowAmerica Rye.

"If we had an MVP award, we'd break it down into fifty pieces and present each one to our extraordinary volunteers."

Mr. Williams underscored the importance of establishing the racecourse, the timing and results management systems, boat and equipment logistics, and registration as core functions in the regatta's first year. "Not only were we building a first-time regatta, we also were creating a boathouse out of thin air," he explained. "Area rowing clubs provided essential equipment, while programs in Boston and Washington, DC contributed many of our boats."
