AMACO's Pompeian Ash Glazes Make Traditional Finishes Easy

INDIANAPOLIS, IN--(Marketwire - January 25, 2010) - This month AMACO is featuring the Pompeian Ash glaze series. Designed in 2003 by renowned potter George Debikey, Pompeian Ash glazes replicate the side-to-side designs of more conventional ash glazes. Traditional firing entails cone 10/11 temperatures and the use of a gas or wood kiln, but Pompeian Ash glaze is made to fire in a cone 5 and can be used in electric kilns.

These glazes and a variety of other low fire glazes are applied by gentle brush strokes or dipping. Expert potters suggest giving the glaze room to run down the object, creating the desired wiggly effect. The Pompeian glazes also work in conjunction with AMACO porcelain clays and stoneware.

Pompeian Ash meets the ACMI standards and its non-toxic glazes come in a variety of colors, including black, buff, blue and tan. There are also brown and green Pompeian Ash glazes for more experienced artists, which are restricted from use in grades K-6.

Debikey understood early in his career the need for safe art projects and devoted much of his 33 years with AMACO to the safety program at the Art and Creative Material Institute (ACMI). During his tenure, Debikey played a critical role in creating lead-free glazes and removing other possible harmful chemicals commonly used in glazes. He was a great spokesperson for AMACO's commitment to make safe products.

Prior to joining the AMACO team, Mr. Debikey went through his formal training as a Ceramic Engineer and Ceramic Artist in Italy and brings an international flair to both his art and his approach to learning. While Mr. Debikey retired from AMACO in 2007, he continues to be a productive potter, specializing in raku, stoneware, earthenware and porcelain.

His work has appeared in numerous Midwest-based art exhibitions and has earned multiple awards. Many corporate and private collections have purchased Mr. Debikey's work over the years, including the Indiana State Museum Collection. Whether via Pompeian Ash glazes or his safety efforts over the years, his contribution to AMACO and the art world continues to inspire a new generation of artists.
