Amazon Has the Right Idea With the Wrong Solution

CEO of One of Nation's Largest POS System Companies, Available to Comment

ALLENTOWN, PA--(Marketwired - Aug 15, 2014) - Jared Isaacman, CEO of Harbortouch, one of the largest POS providers in the country, believes that Amazon's entry into the mobile payment business is a losing proposition for both Amazon and their potential customers.

While he agrees with Matt Swann, VP of local commerce for Amazon, that cost is a major factor for business owners when choosing a point of sale system, Isaacman points out that there is a lot more to it than that.

Isaacman says, "The mobile solutions offered by companies such as Square, and now Amazon, may seem tempting for merchants due to the low cost, but these solutions simply do not have the functionality or reporting capabilities that real businesses need. Harbortouch's revolutionary free POS program offers full-featured, touch-screen POS systems with no up-front costs, making it a much better solution for small and mid-sized businesses than the mobile dongles being provided by Square and Amazon. Our free POS systems provide the tools that real businesses need to operate, including advanced functionality, robust back-end capabilities and cloud-based reporting."

Isaacman also emphasizes the losing business model that the strategy represents for Amazon: "Square has already found that the micro-merchant market isn't a profitable business, and as a result they have been trying to shift into the more lucrative small business market. However, a mobile app just doesn't meet the needs of this market; these merchants need the features that only a full-featured POS system can provide. As a result, the mobile payment companies are having trouble gaining traction with small to mid-sized businesses and are finding themselves stuck in the unprofitable micro-merchant market that doesn't provide the margins needed for these companies to sustain themselves."
