Amazon Mining Joins Sugarcane Fertilizer Taskforce

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 4, 2009) -

NOT FOR DISTRIBUTION TO U.S. NEWSWIRE SERVICES OR FOR DISSEMINATION IN THE UNITED STATES

Amazon Mining Holding Plc (TSX VENTURE:AMZ)("Amazon" or the "Company"), is pleased to announce its inclusion in a Brazilian government sponsored agrominerals for biofuel production project ("ROCKAPL" - 'Rock' Arranjo Produtivo Local). ROCKAPL is a collaborative effort between government and private enterprise focused on developing fertilizer alternatives for sugarcane destined for ethanol production.

ROCKAPL was developed by EMBRAPA, the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation, with resources from the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology. Amazon joins a group of local ethanol producers and sugarcane growers who will work with the Agronomy Department of Universidade Federal de Lavras and EMBRAPA. Amazon will collaborate with this group to develop ThermoPotash from Amazon's Cerrado Verde project, as a potash rich fertilizer for use on sugarcane crops.

Cerrado Verde is source of a potash rich rock from which Amazon plans to produce a slow-release, non-chloride, multi-nutrient, fertilizer product.

Brazil is the world leader in ethanol production. Sugarcane is the primary feedstock for Brazil's biofuel industry and is 8 times more efficient for conversion into biofuels than corn, beets or wheat. Sugarcane plantations cover 8.4 million hectares that produced 27 million m(3) (7.1 billion gallons) of ethanol in 2008. Brazil is one of the few regions in the world with arable land available to be planted with an estimated 160 million hectares lacking nutrients to be converted to support cash crops.

Commenting President & CEO Cristiano Veloso said, "As a part of the ROCKAPL initiative, Amazon will be able to work closely with our potential customers and opinion makers to develop a product tailored for sugarcane, which is an integral and growing component of the Brazilian economy. Our goal is to build a strong consumer base for our proposed product."
