AMC Health Appoints Dr. Lisa Roberts to Head New Government Market Division

Industry Veteran Will Lead Strategy Efforts to Expand Telehealth Company's Presence, Market Share in the Government Sector

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Dec 10, 2013) - AMC Health, a leading provider of end-to-end telehealth solutions, today announced the appointment of Lisa J. Roberts, Ph.D., as Senior Vice President of the company's new Government Market Division.

The appointment of Dr. Roberts, with her more than 25 years of combined clinical, research and telehealth experience, underscores AMC Health's commitment to providing exceptional remote patient monitoring solutions while signaling its further expansion into the burgeoning public sector. She will be responsible for strategy and business development to expand the company's ability to provide the most advanced technology, analytics and services to government agencies.

"Dr. Roberts is very well-versed on the nuances of working with government entities, especially in the area of telehealth," said Nesim Bildirici, president and CEO of AMC Health. "Selecting Dr. Roberts to lead this new division demonstrates our strong commitment to meet the surging demand for innovative, integrated remote patient monitoring services within the public sector."

Prior to joining AMC Health Dr. Roberts served as VP, Clinical Innovations, Sales and Business Development for Viterion Corporation (formerly a business of Bayer Healthcare). In that position, she managed the U.S. and U.K. government telehealth businesses, including the largest telehealth program in the U.S. (Department of Veterans Affairs) and the U.K. (Whole System Demonstrator Program), from contract procurement to completion. This experience is particularly significant since AMC Health holds a Federal Supply Schedule contract with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

The VA operates the largest telehealth program in the world. A study of the VA's home telehealth program in 2008 showed that it had reduced hospital admissions by 19 percent and decreased the average number of days spent in the hospital by 25 percent. This enterprise-level approach was found to be cost-effective and well accepted by patients. The Department of Veterans Affairs 2014-2020 Strategic Plan calls for increased use of telehealth.

Government efforts to expand telehealth access and adoption overall are growing. The Telehealth Enhancement Act of 2013 (H.R. 3306), introduced by Rep. Gregg Harper (R-MS), seeks to escalate federal support and payments for telehealth services nationwide. If passed, the bill would recognize telehealth services and remote patient monitoring in the national pilot program on payment bundling. It would also authorize Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) to include coverage of telehealth and remote patient monitoring services as supplemental healthcare benefits to the same extent as a Medicare Advantage plan is permitted to provide such coverage. The bill is currently in committee. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recently approved several changes expanding coverage of telehealth services starting in January 2014. The new policies will expand the geographic areas where telehealth service can be provided.

"The fragmentation and rising costs of healthcare are relevant concerns for us all," said Dr. Roberts. "By matching the appropriate devices and technology tools to patient needs to optimize engagement and self-management, we can improve coordinated care and outcomes."

In addition to her business experience, Dr. Roberts is a licensed clinical psychologist who earned her Ph.D. from the University of Washington and completed a post-doctoral fellowship with the Department of Veterans Affairs Mental Illness Research Education Clinical Center (MIRECC). She has published articles in more than a dozen peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, The New England Journal of Medicine, American Journal of Psychiatry, Military Medicine, and Drug and Alcohol Dependence, to name a few. She has published several book chapters and co-authored a book with T. Eckman and A. Shaner, Overcoming Addictions: Skills Training for People with Schizophrenia.

Dr. Roberts is actively involved with the American Telemedicine Association (ATA) and has participated in writing three ATA Practice Guidelines. Among her many business awards, Dr. Roberts received the prestigious Bayer Corporation LIFE Award recognizing her outstanding leadership in the telehealth business and the Bayer Leadership Partnering Award.
