AME BC Media Advisory: Mining Week Community Fair on Wednesday, May 6

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - May 5, 2009) - How is mineral exploration and mining relevant to your everyday life? Discover the answer to this question and more at the third annual BC Mining Week Community Fair. The Association for Mineral Exploration BC and the Mineral Resources Education Program of BC are presenting the Fair in partnership with the "Partners in Mining", BC Mining Week Committee, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6 outside of the Vancouver Art Gallery.



What: Mining Week Community Fair
When: Wednesday, May 6, 2009, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: Lawn facing Georgia Street - Vancouver Art Gallery,
750 Hornby Street, Vancouver
Admission: Free


The Fair will include displays, demonstrations and activities featuring:

- BC's rocks and minerals

- Minerals in everyday life

- Exploration camp tent

- Mining process tent

- Mineral resources recycling

- Geology tours of the Vancouver Art Gallery building

- Gold panning

- Blacksmithing

Crowds will be entertained by "The Casablanca Cowboys" fiddle / guitar duo, and stilt walker / juggler, Mike Battie.

The Fair will be open to the public, and will be well-attended by groups of students from throughout the Lower Mainland.

The modern mineral exploration and mining sector in British Columbia safely generates $8 billion in revenue annually and directly employs over 26,000 people in all areas of the province. Companies spent $367 million on exploration in British Columbia in 2008. Over 800 mineral exploration and mining companies are located downtown within ten blocks of the Vancouver Art Gallery.
