AME BC: Media Advisory; Mining Week Community Fair to Showcase Mining's Role in Everyday Life

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - May 13, 2008) - How does a mineral become a cell phone? What is the role of mining in daily life? These questions and many more are answered at the BC Mining Week Community Fair, a partnership between the Association for Mineral Exploration BC, the Mineral Resources Education Program of BC, the Mining Association of BC, and other BC Mining Week sponsors, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14. Pavilions at the fair will showcase the roles that minerals and mining play in our daily lives. Groups of students from throughout the Lower Mainland will also participate in a variety of activities highlighting the vital role of mining and mineral exploration in day-to-day life.

Some highlights of the fair include the following:

- Eight pavilions featuring a variety of mineral exploration and mining related displays and activities

- Attendance by students from schools throughout the Lower Mainland

- Mineral exploration and mining equipment displays

- Opportunities to don mineral exploration and mining apparel

- Gold panning with award winning Yukon Dan

- Blacksmithing demonstrations

- Musical entertainment by The Soul Survivors steel drum band

The BC Mining Week Community Fair, now in its second year, is an opportunity for the public to learn about mineral exploration and mining. The BC mining industry, the safest heavy industry in the province, includes 20 major operating coal, metal and aggregate mines. The BC mineral exploration and mining sector impacts directly, and indirectly, over 100,000 jobs in the province - almost 1 in every 20 jobs.
