American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery Announces New You Magazine

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwire - December 15, 2009) - The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery today announced the launch of New You, the official consumer magazine of the 2,500-member organization of doctors dedicated to patient safety and physician education in cosmetic surgery. The launch is set for January 2010.

"Our goal is to educate the public about their choices in cosmetic procedures," said Jeff Knezovich, executive vice president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. "Whether our readers want to reduce wrinkles to look younger, or change something more fundamental with a facelift or liposuction, we want them to be fully informed about the costs, the results and the safety issues."

New You editor-in-chief J.P. Faber emphasizes that the magazine and its website would not be 'celebrity driven' but would be about normal, regular people. Part of the magazine's mission, said Faber, is to overcome the 'stigma' of cosmetic surgery and make it more mainstream and part of an overall health and beauty regimen.

Patrick McMenamin, MD, the current president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and the magazine's Medical Editor, stressed that the magazine would focus on "real doctors performing real procedures," with an emphasis on patient safety and realistic expectations.

"We don't want to hype patients with false hopes," said McMenamin. "Cosmetic surgery can do wonderful things, but there are limits. We want our patients to be safe, first of all, and then to be well-educated about what to expect."

The premiere issue of the magazine releases in mid January with an expected press run of 250,000. Copies will be distributed in waiting rooms of American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery member doctors, as well as in bookstores, newsstands, high-end hotels and spas, and in the waiting rooms of related doctors, such as cosmetic dentists.

"We recognize that mass audience magazines as a group are facing a slump, which is one reason why we are narrowly targeting our audience for advertisers," Faber said. "Our readers are actively spending on their appearance, specifically to reverse the signs of aging. This is a great audience for any provider of cosmetic products or procedures."
